Why Totus Tuition Exists

The most pressing problem facing young people today is the huge gulf between what we expect of our students, and what we equip them for; whether that be an impressive and happy start at their new secondary school or a dazzling performance in the exam they must sit to get them there.

This is a problem. But it is not surprising. Our primary schools are loaded with students, and teachers must necessarily focus more on class management than doing what they wish they could- helping each and every individual to reach their own unique potential.

Totus Tuition exists to deliver the personalised mentorship and teaching that students deserve, and parents demand, and which schools cannot provide. Ours is a general education service that provides specific results. Our students are taught and motivated by Educational Mentors of the highest possible standards, as part of the original and proven system of materials and techniques we call the Totus System. They are taught how to be happier, healthier and more successful, both academically and personally. Indeed, our aim is no less than to guide, equip and inspire the next generation of confident social leaders as we set about helping families achieve the results they desire.

Students Under Pressure

In Finland- the country that has consistently topped international league tables for student performance- children do not enter the formal education system until they are 7. They are not tested until they are 18. There is much to be impressed about in the Finnish model. But commitment to an educational system like this can only come as part of a foundational, far wider commitment to re-ordering a society’s maternity leave, paternity leave, benefit payment system, nursery care system, and preference for ‘excellence’ over equity. Whatever the reasons, and whatever the merits, in the UK we have not sought to order our society in these ways.

As a result, families know they must act in any way that they can to help students develop and reach their true potential. They do so knowing that the effect of education on their lives can be seismic; that it can be a golden ticket to far greater opportunity. Indeed, many families now seek out-of-school-learning for this very reason, prioritising this expense over others (vacations, renovations, etc.), in the hope that their child will be given the chance to thrive and, perhaps, reach a selective secondary school.

Of course, nobody can deny them that choice. But the result is tremendous pressure on our young people. And the problem is that our young people have never been equipped with strategies to deal with this pressure. We have not built their understanding of how they learn. Of how the mind works. Of how their mind works. We do not teach them about the things that would help them balance academic development with a healthy and active social life. Things like interpersonal communication. Negotiation. Emotional intelligence. Time management.

The standard approach has been to coach students to pass exams in order to get to the top schools. And to forget about equipping them with the strategies to thrive, and to be effective and happy, once they get there. We pressure them to get results but we do not inspire them to be hungrier and more effective learners. The problem is so bad, and affects families so much, that in 2013 Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg cited improving the transition from primary to secondary school as a priority in his Government’s education policy. But words come easy, and little is changing.

The Totus Tuition System

At Totus Tuition we take a different approach. We are the most effective method of getting your child into their school of their choice. But we also help them succeed once they arrive there. Our aim is to guide, inspire and equip students as we help them become more confident and effective learners in both the short and the long term. We are mentors as much as we are teachers. We teach the child based on the interests they themselves have, and their unique personality. We teach a student how to learn and we put their learning into context for them. In short, we teach the mind and not just the brain.

The Totus Tuition is built from the insight and personal experience of its founders, who have managed to attain places at the world’s top educational institutions- including one of the UK’s leading schools and Harvard University in the USA. The Totus Tuition system is a holistic one, comprising an integrated educational assessment, originally authored materials (created by exceptional graduates from Oxbridge and teachers with decades of experience) and true excellence in teaching. We combine teaching around the specific examination the student will sit, with unique techniques and strategies that ensure more rounded academic and personal development. In this way we not only ensure a student gets the results they need to go to their school of choice, we also ensure they will excel in the new educational landscape they face once there.

Education is still a golden ticket. But it much change to fit the times. It must be personalised. And it must empower students and their families.

Those who teach our students must guide, equip and inspire the individual.

That is why we exist.

Please note we believe this service should be accessible for all families, even those who have fallen on rough financial times. Please reach out to us to discuss your particular situation.
